Abstract

Ba0.8Sr0.2TiO3 (BST) particles are an effective reinforcement to reduce the coefficient of thermal expansion of Cu composites because of their negative thermal expansion behavior during phase transformation. However, improving interface bonding is still the key point to further study. In this study, NiO interface coating is employed in the BST/Cu composite to improve interface bonding. NiO interface coating of the composite broadens the phase transformation temperature range of BST particles. Accordingly, the average thermal expansion of the composite in the temperature range of 30-250°C is reduced from 12.99×10-6 to 11.71×10-6 °C-1. In addition, the mechanical properties of the composite are considerably enhanced. In specific, the yield strength and the compressive strength are increased by 72.8% and 41.3%, respectively. This work verifies that NiO interface coating can effectively improve the interface bonding in the BST/Cu composite and further enhance the properties of the composite. The results imply that the NiO-BST/Cu composite has great potential for application in the future.
