Abstract
A new grain refinement technology for 18Ni maraging steel was studied. By high temperature solubilization, the coarse grain specimens were held for a short time at different temperature. Metallurgical structure was observed to confirm the recrystallization temperature. To refine the grain, α′⇌γ cyclic phase transformation was conducted by heating the specimens to different temperature over the recrystallizing point and then cooling to room temperature. By analyzing the fine microstructure after phase transformation, the new cyclic heat treatment technique with varying temperature was developed for grain refinement of 18Ni maraging steel. As a result, the grains are refined and the strength and plasticity are improved markedly.
