Multi-walled carbon nanotubes-poly(p-phenylene-2,6-benzoxazole) nanocomposites prepared by in-situ polymerization process

Abstract

The multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) was treated with strong oxidizability acid to form the functional multi-walled carbon nanotubes (FMWNTs). The surface functional groups of MWNTs before and after treatment were analyzed by means of Fourier transform infrared spcetroscopy(FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Then FMWNTs-PBO nano composites were successfully prepared by the in-situ polymerization method. The results of FTIR and XPS analysis show that the surface of MWNTs after treatment contains many carboxyl groups and hydroxyl groups. Compared with PBO fibers under same conditions, the hook joint strength of FMWNTs-PBO fiber is enhanced by 30%. The polymerization mechanism of FMWNTs and PBO oligomer was given.
