Abstract

The approaches for improving the room temperature plasticity and toughness of intermetallics were summarized, and the authors' research results of "strengthening and toughening NiAl intermetallics and intermetallic coatings materials with rare earth" were also introduced. The rare earth elements or the rare earth + other alloying agents were added into the thermal sprayed feedstock, by which the brittleness of the NiAl intermetallics at room temperature can be inhibited. The modified NiAl intermetallic coatings with certain thickness, fine continuous and homogeneous density were prepared consequently. The hardness, wear resistance, thermal shock resistance and carburizing resistance of the NiAl intermetallic coatings were improved greatly. This new NiAl intermetallic coating can be applied in the fields of airplane, chemistry, petroleum, natural gas and steel manufacture.
