Abstract
Renewable energy resources have been promoted to replace the fossil fuel for environmental concern. However, the large scale deployment of the renewable energy, such as photovoltaic and wind generation, can introduce new challenges for the grid operation, due to their high power production variability. This creates more frequent disturbances such as voltage flickers and voltage sag. Recent researches show that storage systems are promising solutions to mitigate the disturbances. The power electronics-based Smart Transformer provides a flexible integration for the storage system. This paper analyzes the performance of different smart transformer-based storage systems, considering different disturbances. The suitable storage system preventing the power supply to the smart transformer-fed loads from interruption have been proposed. The performance of the control has been validated in a 11kV radial feeder, which is modeled in PSCAD/EMTDC. The results show that the smart transformer-based storage systems can effectively mitigate the disturbances of the grid, without affecting the smart transformer-fed loads.
