Abstract
The fatigue damage state of asphalt mixtures under repeated loading with the indirect tensile test (IDT) was analyzed in this study. To relate the fatigue damage behavior to the air-void content asphalt samples with different air void ratios were analyzed based on their micro-structure by means of digital image processing (DIP). Samples were extracted for further investigations from the test track at the Institute for Highway Engineering Aachen (ISAC). X-ray Computed Tomography (XCT) was used to analyze the samples before and after loading with an IDT at temperatures of-10°C, 0°C and 10°C. The relationship between air-void ratio and fatigue damage was investigated. The results show that the air-void distribution can be measured with XCT images and calculated with DIP effectively. The fatigue damage ratio exhibited a linear relationship with the complexity of the air-void morphology; it provides an assessment background for fatigue damage.
