Abstract
Proposed a new machining method to deposit tool electrode material on workpiece in air by micro electrical discharge machining (Micro EDM), which breaks through the constraint of traditional EDM. With common wire tool electrode, in the medium of air, tool electrode material is deposited on the surface of work-piece by pulse discharge. Then, by changing machining polarity and proper track control to selectively remove the deposit material, the deposition and removal of tool electrode material is realized. Based on a lots of experiments, the three electrode materials, steel, brass and tungsten, are deposited on the workpiece to fabricate micro-cylinders and a micro-spiral. The structure, hardness and chemical components of the deposit material are systemically analyzed, which indicates that the compact and hard deposit can meet the requirement of the functional material.
