Abstract

This paper aims to propose a mesoscale model to analysis the effect of adding rubber particles on the tensile properties of crumb rubber concrete (CRC). The internal structure of CRC is simplified as a five-phase material composed of rubber, coarse aggregate, mortar, coarse aggregate-mortar interfacial transition zone (A-M ITZ), and rubber-mortar interfacial transition zone (R-M ITZ). The effects of rubber content, size, and shape on the tensile strength of CRC were investigated using mesoscopic simulation. The results showed that rubber content rather than shape and size was the controlling factor affecting strength reduction. The effect of R-M ITZ with a thickness of 0.05 mm on the tensile strength of CRC was 0.57%, which could be ignored. CRC samples with the same rubber content but different rubber particle distributions had similar average strengths. Rubber particles could be equivalent to the same number of pores when studying their influence on the tensile properties of CRC. A pore-based model was developed to predict the tensile strength of CRC, and the results were in good agreement with the experimental values.
