Abstract

Microcasting quality determines its range of applications in industry. By means of micro-precision casting processes based on permanent moulds, plate microcastings at micron sizes were prepared. Their tensile strength, elongation percentage and fracture morphology, as well as the interactions between these parameters were investigated. The results showed that the strength and elongation percentage of micro-castings increase with decreasing thickness, meaning that the mechanical properties of micro-castings have a remarkable scale effect. The main reason for the improvement of mechanical properties is due to the finegrained strengthening and blockage of the second-phase nano-grain in the dimple which prevent crack growth.
