N2 - The electromagnetic attraction force is closely related to the operation performance, switching capability and even electrical lifetime of alternating current (AC) contactors. The accurate acquisition of electromagnetic attraction force can help to better understand the accelerated motion process in the pick-up operation of electromechanical components. In this paper, the transient electromagnetic force, coil voltage and coil current are measured in real time by the designed test rig. Then, the effects of coil voltage and air gap on the electromagnetic characteristics are investigated explicitly for a commercial low voltage 3-phase AC contactor. In the static force measurement mode, the influence of coil voltage on the electromagnetic attraction force is investigated explicitly with different air gaps. In the dynamic force measurement mode, the accelerated motion time and collision force are extracted from the force waveforms. It is found the point-on-wave (POW) of coil voltage determines the electromechanical process of AC contactor, and the crucial condition is the occurrence of coil current commutating in the accelerated motion stage. Finally, the matching relationship between electromagnetic attraction force and mechanical opposing force in the pick-up process of AC contactors is discussed.
