Abstract

Due to its high power density and efficiency, permanent magnet synchronous motors have attracted considerable attention; however, their large short-circuit current limits their application in aviation starter-generators. This article presents a dual-winding permanent magnet synchronous starter-generator (DWPMS SG). The rotor features a structure of permanent magnets and magnetic barriers, enhancing its short-circuit resistance. This article presents the analysis and design of the proposed DWPMS SG. First, the topology and characteristics of the DWPMS SG are introduced. Second, an improved magnetic equivalent circuit is proposed, which accounts for the difference in leakage inductance between the two windings. Third, a rotor parameter design method that balances electromagnetic performance and short-circuit safety is proposed. Finally, a prototype is designed and manufactured, and experiments on starting, power generation, and short-circuit faults are conducted. The study demonstrates that the proposed DWPMS SG exhibits enhanced electromagnetic performance.
