Abstract

Visible light communication (VLC) has been recognized as an energy-efficient, high-capacity next-generation enabling technique for indoor communications. However, its line-of-sight (LOS) can be considerably blocked by the indoor moving objects, which affects the overall VLC quality of service (QoS). In this paper, we propose a novel RIS-assisted optical beamforming scheme using a spatial light modulator (SLM) in a VLC indoor system, where the virtual LOS (VLOS) invoked by the RIS can alleviate the Non-LOS (NLOS) localization challenge. Explicitly, we introduce a novel beam sweeping algorithm, striking a trade-off between complexity and orientation accuracy. In addition, we achieve channel state information-based localization with and without LOS by comparing the accuracy of different beam sweeping methods. Simulation results show that the novel beam sweeping algorithm substantially reduces the computational complexity compared to the conventional exhaustive methods in 5-degree resolution while presenting a higher accuracy of 18.18 % in contrast to the hierarchical code-book method at an SNR of 50 dB.
