Abstract
A local terrain detection method based on infrared sensor is provided to meet the mobile robot's requirements in unstructured and unknown environments. Twenty-one kinds of basic instances of local terrain are analyzed and one mechanical detection method and another based on sensor are put up and compared. The terrain grade calculation formula is deducted and the behaviors of mobile robot are given which are also relative to corresponding terrain changes. The experiments based on Infrared sensor prove the validity of the proposed detection method, which offers the mobile robot a proper guide and solid insurance to move in unknown environments.
