Abstract

High speed permanent-magnet synchronous motors (HSPMSMs) have many advantages such as high powerdensity, high efficiency, small size, and so on. But in some applications motors are pursued to output more power as much as possible within a short constant time, so that conventional design is unable to meet the demand. In this paper, first, a calculation method of surface-mounted permanent magnet synchronous motors is presented, which is capable to find the largest output power. In addition, the main factors that limiting motor power output are revealed, and the calculation of peak output power in HSPMSM with restrictions of input voltage and copper loss coefficient is presented. Finally, a short-term high overload HSPMSM is designed by using finite element analysis, which has 10 times overload ability, and the peak power density is 15kW/kg. This paper provides a general design theory of high overload HSPMSM.
