abstract = "In this paper, a compact LHM, which unit electrical cell size is 0.07 and relative bandwidth is 27\%, is designed with CST's MWS simulation tools. The effective permittivity and effective permeability of the LHM are extracted from the reflection and transmission data based on improved NRW approach. Calculation results show that the effective permittivity and effective permeability are simultaneously negative within 8.4∼11 GHz. In addition, in order to verify the DNG property the reflection (S'11) and transmission (S' 21) for the scattering of the normally incident plane wave from an ideal uniform LHM slab described by Drude model, which is equivalent to the composite one, are numerically simulated. Results show that the S'11 and S'21 are in good agreement with S11 and S21 for both magnitude and phase respectively. In addition, the negative refraction and backward wave phenomena of the designed LHM will also be presented in our presentation.",
