Abstract

The interfacial microstructure of an Al18B4O 33w/AZ91 magnesium matrix composite was investigated using transmission electron microscopy. The morphology, structure and formation mechanisms of the reaction phases were discussed. The composite was fabricated by squeeze casting, and the mold and the preform were preheated at 500°C. Results show that the interfacial reaction started to increase only after the composite was held above the liquidus temperature of AZ91 for long periods.
