Abstract

Bioelectrochemical systems (BESs) is a popular wastewater treatment technology, and its common application is generating electricity power or bioenergy gases along with the organic matter removal. Meanwhile, inorganic compound synthesis (hydrogen peroxide, metal, struvite crystals, and other inorganics) at the cathode in BESs was a mentionable application that could recycle specific resources avoiding their negative influence on reactor performance or environment as ionic state. In this section, different cations as electron acceptors reduced in different constructed BESs are introduced to comprehend the principle and process. Some significant factors including the electrode design, ion exchange membrane selection, and operating conditions are compared aiming to guide the optimization of recovery efficiency, organics removal, electricity, and biogas production. Moreover, the application of inorganic compound synthesis in BESs was expounded. The study of generating high value-added chemicals through cheap and sustainable resources required more technical improvement for economic applicability.
