Influence of soundscape on emotional arousal in monumental open spaces in China

As a type of landscape with special cultural connotation and symbolic significance, monumental places carry people's emotional sustenance for the memorial subject. Based on the special cultural and spiritual connotation of commemorative landscape, it is different from other landscape types in terms of soundscape perception. A comparative study of soundscape and emotional arousal for Nanjing Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum and Yuhuatai Martyrs Cemetery as examples had been conducted. Through field questionnaire surveys, data of basic information, environmental evaluation, and emotional arousal evaluation of subjects were obtained. The results showed that appropriateness of the audio-visual landscape affected the acoustic and overall environmental satisfaction positively. The environment evaluations of the sense of ceremony and solemnity were positively correlated with the satisfaction of the soundscape. Emotional arousal was positively correlated with the sense of ceremony, solemnity, mission, responsibility, admiration, and meaning. Soundscape in the monumental places based on emotional arousal, helps to construct and evoke the emotions of unforgettable, memorable and educational significance.
