Abstract

In this paper, two rotor structures of permanent magnet wind generator are discussed: surface mounted permanent magnet rotor and permanent magnet rotor fixed with pole shoes. Firstly the startup torque of generator is studied where the sectional rotor structure is usually used for surface mounted PM generator and non-uniform pole shoe shape is adopted for the salient pole PM generator to reduce cogging torque. Then the sudden short circuit current and its impact on permanent magnet of wind generator are studied. From comparison of performances for the two structures, some useful conclusions are obtained through the above analyses.
