Abstract

The influence of interfacial reaction on interfacial performances of carbon fiber/polyarylacetylene (PAA) composite was studied by using the method of grafting coupling agent of vinyltrimethoxysilane (A-171) with double bond onto the surface of carbon fiber. The modified carbon fiber surface characteristics were examined by functional group titration and surface energy measurement. Based on the analysis of reactivity between the triple bond of phenylacetylene and the double bond of A-171, the reactivity between the triple bond of PAA resin and the double bond of A-171 was evaluated. The interfacial adhesion of CF/PAA composite was evaluated by fracture morphology analysis and interlaminar shear strength (σILSS) testing. The results indicate that the triple bond of PAA resin can react with the double bond of A-171, and the reactivity was high. Therefore, the interfacial adhesion of CF/PAA composite was improved obviously, and σILSS can reach 43.3 MPa, which was increased by 43% compared with untreated one.
