Hybrid ARQ using turbo codes in deep space communication

Abstract

Turbo codes recommended by the Consultative Committee for Space Data Systems (CCS-DS) can correct errors in transmitting information in deep space communication. This paper proposes a hybrid ARQ method for improving efficiency of Turbo codes recommended by CCSDS correcting error of transmitting image compression data. These data are from discrete wavelet transform (DWT) of image. The way has virtue of different hybrid ARQ and effectively makes use of recommended Turbo codes by CCSDS based on different importance of data by DWT. The simulations on FER and the throughput of hybrid ARQ shows that the way not only meets the demand of correcting errors but also improves efficiency because of the characteristics of deep space communication.
