Abstract

Equiaxed shape SrSO4 powder with a particle size of 80nm was synthesized by chemical precipitation method. ZrO2 (3mol%Y2O3)-20wt%Al2O3 (TZ3Y20A) ceramics was selected as the matrix. TZ3Y20A-SrSO4 ceramic matrix composites were fabricated by hot-pressing process. The microstructure and mechanical properties of the sintered specimens were investigated. The tribological properties of the composites from room temperature to 800°C were studied by using a ball-on-disk high temperature wear tester. The friction coefficients of different TZ3Y20A-SrSO4 composites are in the range of 0.31 to 0.42 and the wear rates are in the order of 10-5mm3/Nm from room temperature to 800°C. A smooth SrSO4 lubricating film is formed on the worn surface of TZ3Y20A-SrSO4 composites, which has distinctly improved the high-temperature friction and wear properties.
