High-temperature electrochemical synthesis of tantalum diboride in chloride-fluoride-melts

Abstract

Conditions are given for the TaB2 electrochemical synthesis from such salt melts as equimolar NaCl-KCl mixtures with K2TaF7, KBF4 and KF(NaF) added at 973 K. The processes occurring in the system result from the formation of Ta and B chloride-fluoride complexes in melts. Controlling the anion composition of an electrolyzer, one can choice conditions for 'thermodynamic' mode of the synthesis. It is carried out in a sealed glass carbon electrolyzer lined with metallic Ta serving as an anode. Glass carbon, steel 3, Nb, Mo are used as a material for the cathode. With the electrolyzer temperature of 973-1023 K and the cathode density of 5×10-2-2×10-1 A/cm2 dense TaB2 coats have been obtained on steel 3 and Nb.
