Abstract

Peer-to-peer (P2P) systems, which are realized as overlays on top of the underlying Internet routing architecture, contribute a significant portion of today's Internet traffic. They have recently absorbed a lot of attention from the Internet users and the research community. Regarding the difficulty and cost for a large scale living deployment, many proposed P2P protocols were evaluated by a simulator. However, most of current P2P simulators have common drawbacks including the poor scalability with massive simulated peers and the lack of realistic underlay network layer support. Unfortunately, those functionalities are critical to understand how a P2P protocol would behave in the real circumstance. In this paper, we present some approaches to overcome such defects, and the design considerations of HiFiP2P, our novel large- scale parallel Peer-to-Peer simulator with a measured realistic Internet data as its network layer support. Comparison experiments show that HiFiP2P simulator outperforms the existing simulation platform J-Sim & PlanetSim in both aspects of scalability and efficiency.
