Grinding titanium alloy (Ti-6Al-4V) by cryogenic cooling

Abstract

Cryogenic cooling in grinding is a new concept to control the high grinding zone temperature without polluting the environment. The intensive temperature in grinding not only limits the wheel life but also impair the ground surface especially in grinding titanium alloys. In the paper, the experimental set for cryogenic surface grinding designed. Experiments have been carried out to study the effect of cryogenic cooling on grinding forces. A standard thermal model created using finite element analyze (FEM) was employed to analyses the grinding temperature. Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) observations indicated the surfaces to be appreciably improved. All of these results indicated that, by using cryogenic cooling, the grinding forces and grinding temperature reduced and the ground surface integrity is improved distinctly with the comparison of the common grinding.
