Abstract

Because of their excellent energy dissipation capacity without buckling at design deformation, buckling restrained braces (BRBs) have been widely studied and used in Japan and USA. However, most of these researches and applications focused on traditional BRBs which consist of a conventional brace encased in a steel tube filled with mortar or concrete. In this paper, the properties of all-steel BRB with cruciform cross section encased in a square steel tube, which is planed to be installed in a six-floor office building in Beijing, were examined by full-scale subassemblage test. The results indicate this kind of BRB exhibits high energy dissipation capacity and stable hysteretic characteristic. Besides, some issues were point out for the practical applications of BRBs.
