Abstract

The mechanical properties on friction stir welded AZ31 magnesium alloy joint were studied. The tensile and fatigue testing results show that the strength of friction stir welded AZ31 magnesium alloy joint can reach to 92.9% of the base metal. The fracture location is on the thermal mechanical affected zone in the advancing side. This is because of the unequal stratum structure and the stress concentration on this zone. Obvious tearing crack and fiber tissue was observed by scanning electric microscopy.
