Abstract

An interpretation is proposed of the effect, observed in the literature, of a relative increase in the negative-hydrogen-ion current upon switching to the pulsed power supply regime. It is connected with the escape of electrons from the volume in the initial stages of decay and formation of ion-ion plasma. This circumstance can have fundamental significance for our understanding of the physical mechanisms of ion sources and optimization of their operation.
