Abstract
Equal-cross-section lateral extrusion (ECSLE) offers the capability to make bulk workpieces with ultrafine structures. In this process, the dimensions of the workpiece are not changed during deformation, so that the workpiece can be deformed cyclically to a very large strain in one set of dies, and thus the said advantage. To provide greater understanding of this process, load vs displacement curves during the equal-cross-section lateral extrusion process were determined. The measurements compare well with calculations made using the finite element method, which in addition, revealed the effects of many influencing factors on load.
