Abstract

In this paper, a fast local motion estimation algorithm based on Gray-coded refined multiple bit-plane matching with the Three Step Search is proposed. The proposed algorithm performs the motion estimation with 3 bit-planes in different search steps, which are convenient to be realized by VLSL The principles on how to choose the planes are also given out. In order to improve the performance, after the bit-plane matching, a finally refined full search around the best bit-plane matching result is adopted in 3×3 pixels area. Experimental results indicate that the proposed method is a computationally efficient alternative to the existing ones while the precision is quite close to that with the full search block matching.
