title = "Filtering alternative surge protection schemes for long distance water pipeline system: A case study of a quintuplicate U-shaped pipe",
abstract = "For the long distance pipeline, there are always several options for protecting pipeline systems from the effects of transients and surges. Even each scheme has a qualified performance, maybe it is not the best and without considering the economic effect. This paper summarizes the characteristics and selection considerations of four kinds of surge protection devices: surge tank, one-way surge tank, vacuum breaker valve and two-way adjustment of water \& air by a case in which the pipeline is composed of 5 U-shaped tubes in series, total length is 36.3 km, diameter is 1800 mm or 1600mm, which the flowrate is 3 508 L/s. The following conclusions can be summarized, the water hammer protection effect is very good with air valves and air vacuum valves in the peaks in the long-distance water pipeline with many U-shaped tube. When there are still some uncertainties, water hammer protection devices should be determined after a large number of repeated calculations.",
