Abstract

A novel commercially scalable machining method, termed cooperative vibration diamond texturing (CVDT), is proposed for fast generation of various well-defined mechano-bactericidal hierarchical textures on engineered surfaces. Five kinds of high-quality hierarchically textures in the micron and nanometer levels were successfully fabricated, then the antibacterial evaluations using Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli were conducted to compare their antibacterial performances. The results show that the bacterial colonies forming unit can be reduced with an optimal ratio up to 99.9% for both strains compared to the blank control unit, suggesting CVDT is a promising machining method for strengthening the mechano-bactericidal effect.
