Abstract

Walking is essential in establishing an efficient, harmonious, and energetic community. Walkability-enhanced applications play a crucial role in the development of smart cities. The application design needs to consider user experiences adequately. Gamification techniques improve user experiences and receive considerable attention. This study investigated user experiences of walkability-enhanced applications and the factors influencing the adoption of gamification strategies. The Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology method is employed to survey Shenzhen pedestrians. The findings reveal that pedestrians are willing to accept the walkability-enhanced application, employing gamification in planning their routes to make walking enjoyable in an interactive mode. Infrastructure construction, environmental factors, social influence, and accessibility significantly impact the behavioural intention of pedestrians. This study provides insights for city designers on the development of walkability-enhanced applications.
