Abstract

It is difficult to utilize advanced technology in the pulp and paper industry. One reason for this is that the complexity of advanced control theory cannot be grasped without sufficient mathematical background. On the other hand, people who work on theoretical research have no experience of practical industrial processes. To solve the problems in papermaking, a novel approach to on-line control - expert control which contains analytical and heuristic approaches - is proposed in this paper. A number of questions relating to expert control of the papermaking process are discussed. An implementation of expert control, and its actual results, are shown.
