Abstract

A gain-switched Tm 3+-doped double-clad silica fiber laser operating at a wavelength of approximate 2μm with moderate output energy 14.7mJ per pulse and a slope efficiency of 39.5% (respect to launched pump energy) is realized pumped at 1.064μm from a Nd: YAG laser. We also present results from a numerical model that simulates 3H 5-band pumping and includes all of the known pump excited-state absorption (ESA) mechanisms and, in addition, four cross-relaxation mechanisms have also been included.
