Abstract
Ventilated cavitation and its stability were studied through a series of water tunnel experiments. The results show that the effects of gravity on ventilated cavitation formed by increasing and decreasing air volume are different, but axial deformations of ventilated cavitation all increase non-linearly. When the effect of gravity is small, the shapes and dimensions of ventilated and natural cavitation are essentially similar if the cavitation numbers are i-dentical, and their aspect ratios will decrease along with increasing cavitation number. Three forms of instability in ventilated cavitation were observed: bubble oscillation, fluctuation of cavitation interface, and twisting of cavitation interface. Their effects on cavitation are different due to their different characteristics.
