Abstract

Effective bond between Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) plate and concrete is the base of ensuring composite behavior of hybrid FRP-concrete structures. The bond behavior between FRP plate and concrete is studied by experiment on a single shear test setup. Coarse sand coating method for the surface of FRP plate is applied to strengthen the bond behavior between the two materials. Various lengths of coarse sand coating are also considered in this test. Following conclusions are drawn from this study: (1) the failure mode of all specimens is typical brittle failure; (2) average bond strengths between FRP plate and concrete are in inverse proportion to the lengths of coarse sand coating; (3) coarse sand coating is considered as an effective bond measure for the interface between FRP and concrete in hybrid FRP-concrete structures; (4) the proposed design methods can be used for shear design of the interface between FRP plate and concrete in hybrid FRP-concrete structures.
