Abstract

This paper is concerned with the development of high-strength and wear-resistant polymer composite materials (PCMs) based on the ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) and basalt fiber (BF). For a uniform distribution of the filler in the polymer matrix, a mechanical co-activation of UHMWPE and BF was applied in the planetary mill for 2 minutes and 20 minutes. It was found that the mechanical co-activation carried out for 20 minutes results in the increase of the tensile strength by 14 % and the elastic modulus by 19 % as compared to the original UHMWPE. It was shown by the method of scanning electron microscopy that with the increase of the mechanical co-activation duration there occurs reduction in the structural elements - spherulites.
