Abstract

Based on a model of the activity coefficient of the components in a melt that was established by the authors earlier, the activity coefficient and the saturation pressure of components in Ti-6Al-4V melt were calculated. Using the calculated data of the activity coefficient and the saturation pressure, the relative evaporation coefficient β has been deduced to judge the evaporation tendency of these components. When the temperature is less than 2000 K, the relative evaporation coefficient of Al and Ti is: β(Al:Ti)>17, the relative evaporation coefficient of Al and V is: β(Al:V)>96, and the relative evaporation coefficient of Ti and V is: β (Ti:V)>5. This shows that the evaporation tendency of the elements is as follows: Al>T>V, which means that the composition deviation during the melting process is mainly caused by the evaporation loss of component Al.
