abstract = "In underwater acoustic sensor networks (UASNs), data gathering is a fundamental task. With the development of autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV), the method of using AUV to assist collecting UWSN data has attracted the attention of researchers. Existing study rarely considers the spatial impact of underwater 3D environment carefully. In this paper, we propose a 3D underwater AUV-assisted data gathering scheme to collect data from all the sensors effectively. The data collection problem is solved in three steps. We first investigate the underwater spatial wave spreading characteristics. Accordingly, we apply the 3D beam pattern of sensors in node model. Moreover, we construct a cluster-based network and propose a cluster head (CH) selection algorithm based on 3D propagation range. Finally, we design a protocol that takes 3D spatial impacts into account to coordinate transmission in the AUV-aided network. Simulation results corroborate the effectiveness of the proposed methods.",
