Electromagnetic Design and Optimization of an Outer-Rotor Flux-Switching Permanent Magnet Motor

Abstract

In this paper, an outer-rotor flux-switching permanent magnet (OR-FSPM) motor is proposed, along with its corresponding electromagnetic design methodology. In the proposed structure, both the stator and rotor adopt convex pole geometries to enhance magnetic performance. Tangentially magnetized permanent magnets are embedded within the grooved stator teeth. Firstly, the motor topology is introduced, the equation of motor major size is deduced and selection of some main structure parameters are proposed by analyzing the influence of each parameter on the torque characteristics. Secondly, a multi-objective optimization model that integrates the response surface method with a genetic algorithm is proposed and applied to the designed OR-FSPM motor. The optimization targets are set to maximize torque and minimize torque ripple. Finally, the electromagnetic performance before and after optimization under no-load and load conditions is compared and analyzed by finite element simulation, and the results show that optimized OR-FSPM average torque is larger and torque ripple is lower.
