Abstract

Pt/CeO2/CNTs catalysts were prepared by a microwave-assisted polyol approach in order to investigate the effect of the addition of CeO2 with different weight ratios to Pt/CNTs catalysts on electrochemical oxidation of methanol in alkaline solution. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) results showed that the Pt particles were dispersed uniformly on the CeO2/CNTs supports and Pt particles were smaller. The cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry results indicated that the catalytic activity of Pt/CeO2/CNTs catalysts were superior to the Pt/CNTs ones for methanol oxidation in alkaline solution. It was found that the electrochemical active surface area and the peak current density of Pt/CeO2/CNTs catalyst with Pt to CeO2 weight ratio equals 1:0.5 were 76.3 m2·g-1 and 12.95 mA·cm-2, respectively. It exhibited the highest catalytic activity for methanol oxidation. The enhanced electro-chemical activity was attributed to the synergistic effect of Pt and CeO2.
