Abstract

Small amounts of magnesium (Mg) have been shown to increase the creep life and fracture elongation of GH698, a nickel-base superalloy. The minimum creep rate, however, remained unaffected. This mechanism is due to Mg segregation which reduces the surface tension and surface diffusion coefficient, thus decreasing the growth rate of cavities. Mg may also react with sulfur (S), reducing S segregation.
