Abstract

Plasma nitrocarburizing test was carried out on 42CrMo steel with RE addition to the nitrocarburizing atmosphere. The effect of RE on the nitrocarburized layer was investigated by testing and analyzing the microstructure, microhardness and contact fatigue strength. The results show that the catalytic effect of RE on the plasma nitrocarburizing process is remarkable within 8 h and decreases with prolonging treatment time. Because of the RE addition, the grains on surface layer of the steel are finer and the microstructure of the compound layer becomes more compact, and the subsurface microhardness and contact fatigue strength are enhanced rear earth (RE) elament, plasma nitrocarburizing, 42 CrMo steel.
