Abstract

Based on calculating the relationship between the iron content and the adiabatic combustion temperature in self-propagating high temperature synthesis (SHS) of Ni-Zn ferrite powders, the effect of iron content on combustion temperature, combustion wave velocity and the microstructure of products was investigated and an optimal iron content for the SHS process was obtained. The results show that an increase in the iron content results in an increase of combustion temperature and combustion wave velocity. However, when the iron content k value is above 0.9, a large quantity of liquid phase can be observed in the products, and such combustion products can not be used for molding and sintering. Thus, the optimal k value was chosen as 0.5 for the SHS process.
