Abstract

The effect of interfacial reaction on the corrosion behaviors of alumina borate whisker (Al18B4O33w) reinforced aluminum composite has been analyzed in 3.5% NaCl solution at room temperature. The localized corrosion susceptibilities and the stress corrosion cracking behaviors of the composite for each heat treatment were examined by measurement through the cyclic potentiodynamic polarization and double cantilever beam tests. It was found that the degrees of interfacial reaction increase with solution treatment time, and the various degrees of the interfacial reaction led to the difference of composition distribution near the interface between whisker and matrix in the composite. The interfacial reaction plays an important role in the electrochemical corrosion behaviors and stress corrosion cracking behaviors of the composite.
