Effect of back pressure on quick gas blow forming for AZ31 magnesium alloy sheet

Abstract

The effects of back pressure on volume fraction of cavity, bulging height and wall thickness distribution during free bulging were studied through quick gas blow forming tests of AZ31 magnesium alloy rolled sheet. Experimental results showed that under the forming temperature of 350°C, the volume fraction of cavity was 21% and 16% respectively at the dome with back pressure and no back pressure. If the strain was same, the volume fraction of as-formed part with back pressure was smaller than that with no back pressure. Loading of back pressure could reduce effectively the volume fraction of sheet material, and increase the bulging height and thus forming limit.
