Effect of additive on the microstructure and mechanical properties of in situ SiC-BN composites

Research output: Contribution to journalArticlepeer-review

Abstract

The effect of the addition of Al2O3 and Y 2O3 additives on the microstructure and mechanical properties of in situ SiC-BN composites has been investigated. When additives (10 wt%) were added, the in situ reaction among Si3N4, B4C and C started at 1400°C, and completed at 1700°C. However the reaction couldn't entirely completed even the temperature up to 1900°C without Al2O3-Y2O3 additives. Al2O3-Y2O3 could react and form liquid yttrium aluminium garnet, and the additive formed a Y-Al-Si-O liquid phase with SiO2 present in surface of Si3N4 or SiC raw powders. The liquid phase could accelerate the in situ reaction, and improve the density of composites. When the composites have the same content of SiC and BN, the densities and mechanical properties of the composites with additive were higher than the composites without additive.
