Abstract

In a high-density urban environment, some sounds have been found to have a certain impact on mental health. High levels of noise have been associated with depression and anxiety, yet studies on the relation between noise and mental health are limited. Therefore, the aim of this study is to examine the association between individual noise annoyance levels and mental health of residents living near high-traffic roads. The relationship between the acoustic environment and residents' mental feelings was studied through questionnaires. This study shows that social activity noises may be the main cause of mental health injury, followed by traffic noise. There was a correlation between high-level noise annoyance and mental health impairment for both males and females, which may be the combined effect of several kinds of noise. Therefore, the results show the importance of the living environment with respect to mental health. Furthermore, these results can provide guidance for improving the mental health of residents by improving the acoustic environment near high-traffic roads.
