Eccentric performance of slender CFST with machining defects representing local corrosion

Abstract

This paper presents an experimental study on the mechanical performance of circular concrete-filled steel tubular beam-column specimens with simulated local corrosion. Thirteen specimens (including nine specimens with simulated local corrosion and four intact specimens) were tested. Machining defects represented the simulated local corrosion. The main test parameters include defect dimensions (length, width, and depth), defect shape, eccentricity, and slenderness. The effects of these parameters on failure modes, load-mid span deflection relations, and ductility on circular concrete-filled steel tubular beam-column specimens were revealed based on the test results. Finally, considering the characteristic of local corrosion, simplified calculation methods are proposed by modifying the calculation methods of cross-sectional capacity and flexural capacity of the composite section in current codes and verified against the experimental results.
